Earlier this month, I learned how to use a tomahawk, long knife, cutlass, military sabre, and small sword. Next year, the workshop will be held on ship. Here are the sketches I did during the free sparring sessions using mixed weapons.
That's so cool. It always makes me grin when someone posts pictures of guys with swords, hatchets, machetes, wearing pirate outfits or armor... and says "from life". It's like there are illustrations living somewhere, and you can sneak in and draw them...
I think the gesture is really good on the top left in the first one, and the lower right on the last.
Karen Luk is a drawer of words and writer of images. She is an art instructor and freelance illustrator who creates manga inspired comics. The Cartoon Art Museum and Google have exhibited her work. At state and national conferences, she has presented manga/anime history and comics as a storytelling medium. She is a graduate of the California College of Art with a BFA in Illustration.
