Beneath the Surface reception

The reception for Beneath the Surface, my solo exhibition, is next Wednesday, September 26th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. I will be discussing my work at 7:30 pm. I am showing my illustrative pastels and watercolors along with the web comic pages from Girlamatic.com.

The show will run until October 26, 2007 at the Louie-Meager Art Gallery. The promotional card is here:

Lots of walking was made from the Ferry Building, up to Coit Tower, through Little Italy and Chinatown and then ending at Union Square for the 14th Sketchcrawl.

SF Zoo revisited

Here’s a bunch of animal drawings from the SF Zoo I did the last Sunday of April. I got to draw different animals from the last time I visited the zoo in December with the Sketchcrawl group.

Sketchcrawl 14, classic route in SF

The next Sketchcrawl is approaching on May 19th! The San Francisco group is going to revisit the classic route of the Ferry Building, Little Italy and Chinatown, ending in the Yerba Buena Gardens. It will be a fundraiser for Emergency. From Enrico Casarosa's press release:

Emergency is a humanitarian organization founded in 1994 in Milan, Italy, that offers free medical care to civilian victims of war, landmines and poverty worldwide. The organization also builds hospitals and health-care centers, physical and social rehabilitation centers, and first-aid posts. All of its facilities are designed, built and run by specialized international personnel, who in turn train local staff. More information can be found at its Web site: www.emergencyusa.org.

Sakura of America Artist Meet Up

Last night, I went to the meet up sponsored by Sakura of America, the American headquarters of Micron Pigma pens and other products. Peter Ouyang and Julia Reed from Sakura presented their ideas about the emerging manga-anime artists and why they were interested in developing the new market now. Several local Bay Area manga artists showed up from Bay Area Arists Unite (BAAU), along with Ben Seto of Black Sheep Comics and PMBQ, who does the Tea Club.

It was an interesting pitch on Sakura’s desire to help create the marketplace with the assistance of local manga artists. The other part was for the artists/creators to meet other people. My work is not obviously manga influenced and I do watercolors for my comics. Everyone else I met there uses Photoshop and/or pens and markers.

It was nice meeting other artists, not busy drawing or selling. I’ll have to see how the next meet up goes.

Manga, Art & Graphic Novel Expo

The Manga, Art & Graphic Novel Expo last Saturday was a lot more relaxed than APE; probably because I had everything accounted for already. No poster raffle for the mailing lists or candy to lure people to the table. It was a much smaller venue (maybe 250 people) and mostly tweens/teens there. A few teenagers said that they saw me and a couple of the other guest artists already at APE.

I gave away a lot of postcards with my folio and comic website urls on them. For my workshop, I showed how to make my single sheet comic. The most interesting thing about the Expo is that it’s put on by the City of Fremont and not a by a privately run non-profit group.

I had a great time at APE this weekend, meeting and talking with folks, especially ones from Girlamatic.com whom I hadn’t met in person before. Here’s a photo of my display that I shared with Llyn Hunter under Bobcat Publishing:
